Immunology Scientist

Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States Full-time

Evelo Biosciences is seeking a talented Immunologist to join our Immuno-Oncology Research team

Evelo Biosciences is a fast-paced company discovering drugs based on the previously unexplored biology of the interactions between the gut and the rest of the body.  We are developing a new class of medicines that could change the standard of care of many major diseases for the great benefit of large numbers of patients world-wide.   Monoclonal microbials—single strains of human commensal microbes which use naturally evolved pharmacology to modulate immune responses—engage these disease biologies from the gut, thereby providing effective, convenient, and safe medicines to address the unmet needs patients. The successful candidate will contribute to the R&D discovery team’s efforts to expand and progress our pipeline, and further characterize the interplay between microbes and the immune system.  As a member of the Evelo team, you will be a vital part of helping to shape Evelo’s vision: transforming therapies through a new modality of medicines.

We are seeking a talented, agile, and dedicated Scientist (Immunologist) who is interested in joining a dynamic and intellectually challenging team. This exciting role will afford a qualified Immunologist the opportunity to apply their skill set within cellular immunology and Immuno-Oncology to support Evelo’s discovery of novel microbes, microbial derivatives, and their mechanisms relevant for treating immune related diseases.  The successful candidate will possess expertise and hands-on experience in multicolor flow cytometry, in vitro immunologic assays, as well as in vivo Immuno-Oncology models.  In addition, the successful candidate should be a curiosity-driven investigative scientist with a demonstrated track record within the field of Immunology or Immuno-Oncology.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Independently design and perform studies interrogating cellular and molecular immune responses
  • Design, execute and/or supervise complex Flow Cytometric/ Cytof studies
  • Design and execute in vitro studies utilizing primary immune cells to characterize adaptive and innate responses
  • Design and critically analyze in vivo/ ex vivo studies pertinent to tumor immunology
  • Interface with the scientific community via scientific publications and/or presentations at external meetings
  • Abreast and informed with most recent relevant literature
  • Critically analyze and comprehensively present data
  • Timely delivery and management of multiple projects
  • Contribute to experimental design of matrix team and problem-solve in a creative manner

Desired capabilities and skills:

  • Proven expertise in multiparameter flow cytometry, cellular immunology, models of oncology and in-depth ex vivo analysis
  • In-depth knowledge of general immunology, tumor immunology, mucosal biology, cell signaling and host-pathogen interactions is highly desirable with extensive experience in immune and cellular methodologies including mammalian tissue culture, cellular assays assessing cytokine profiling and phenotypic characterization of immune cells, cell viability and cytotoxicity assays
  • Quantitative, analytical and detail oriented in their approach to science
  • Proven ability to conduct high quality independent basic and applied laboratory research as measured by primary authorship and/ or presentations
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of Immuno-oncology including extensive knowledge of current therapeutic strategies
  • Familiarity with high throughput technology, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and/or metabolomics
  • Highly motivated and results-driven individual with a passion for working in a fast-paced and evolving organization
  • Mentally agility and able to manage multiple projects
  • Outstanding team player with exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prism and Tableau

Education and experience requirements:

  • PhD in Immunology or Medicine
  • >5 years of relevant and proven Immunology in-depth experience
  • Experience working in industry preferred, but nor required

About Evelo

Evelo Biosciences, Inc. is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a new modality of medicine, monoclonal microbials, which are designed to act on the gut-body network. Evelo’s product candidates are orally-delivered, single strains of microbes, selected for their defined pharmacological properties. They are intended to modulate systemic immunology and biology by acting on multiple naturally evolved biological pathways through the gut-body network. Evelo believes that monoclonal microbials have the potential to be broadly applicable across many diseases including immunoinflammatory, cancer, autoimmune, metabolic, neurological and neuroinflammatory diseases.

Evelo currently has three product candidates, EDP1066 and EDP1815 for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and EDP1503 for the treatment of cancer, for which ten clinical readouts are expected during 2019 and 2020. Evelo is also advancing additional candidates through preclinical development in other disease areas.
